The Quilt Of Hope

14

March 2009

Event Information

The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre was proud to raffle the “Quilt of Hope” at the Cancer Forum on March 14th 2009.

The quilt was originally designed in Maryland and completed in Bermuda.  This one of a kind, hand made quilt was raffled to raise money for breast cancer awareness. All proceeds will aid breast cancer awareness on the island and the 1 in 9 women that will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.

This quilt is one of many “pink quilts” assembled by quilt guilds across North America in 2008. Thousands of quilters across North America came together in support of raising money and awareness by creating unique "Pink" Quilts in the aid to eradicate breast cancer, one stitch at a time. The final event was a charity auction of hundreds of quilts to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure to end breast cancer.

This story has come to Bermuda from Maryland . The owner of the “Thrifty Needle Quilt” store came to the island and brought with her an unfinished quilt. The quilt was given to the Bermuda Quilter’s Guild to complete with the intention that it be auctioned or raffled off with proceeds to benefit a local cancer project. The finished product is a 63”x72” 100% cotton, pink and white reversible quilt. One side features hundreds of the pink breast cancer ribbons and the other side a pink and white pattern.

“It is with great pleasure and thanks, that the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre have accepted this “Quilt of Hope”. The quilt is beautiful and certainly honors those with cancer. It is only fitting that everyone be given a chance to own this piece of craftsmanship.” says Deborah Titterton Narraway, Marketing Coordinator for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Center .

The quilt was raffled on March 14 and the winner was Mrs Jill Bosch De Noya.  Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets raised $1,299.
