Breast Biopsy
Being told you need a biopsy can feel frightening.
For many people, itβs the moment when worry peaks and assumptions start to take over.
A breast biopsy is a way of getting clearer information.
It does not automatically mean cancer.
Biopsies are commonly recommended to better understand an area of concern and, in many cases, to rule things out. The purpose is clarity, not conclusions.
Breast health decisions often involve generations and personal conversations.
What a breast biopsy is
A breast biopsy involves taking a small sample of tissue so it can be examined more closely.
Doctors recommend a biopsy when imaging shows an area that needs further clarification. It’s a careful, routine step used to help guide next decisions, whatever they may be.
Why a biopsy may be recommended
A biopsy may be suggested if:
- Imaging shows a change that needs more information
- A lump or area feels different
- Results are unclear and more detail is needed
Needing a biopsy does not mean something serious has been found. It means your care team is being thorough and precise.
What to expect
During the procedure:
- The process will be explained before anything begins
- Local anaesthetic is used to keep you comfortable
- The procedure is usually brief
- You can ask questions at any point
If you feel anxious, that’s completely understandable. Many people do.
Waiting for results
Waiting for biopsy results can be one of the most difficult parts of the experience.
Results are reviewed carefully by specialists and shared with your referring doctor, who will discuss them with you and explain what comes next.
If support would be helpful while you’re waiting, you don’t have to manage that uncertainty alone.
Accessing breast biopsy services
Breast biopsy services are available at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre through referral by your doctor.
There is no out-of-pocket cost for breast biopsy services, regardless of insurance coverage.
If you have questions about the procedure or what to expect, your care team can help talk things through before your appointment.
