Hereditary breast cancer in Bermuda: New insights, new approaches
Hereditary breast cancer is usually caused by mutations in 1 of 2 genes, BRCA1 (most recently making the news with Angelina Jolie) and BRCA2. The Bermuda Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment Program has been active on Bermuda since 2006, seeing hundreds of patients and doing over 100 genetic tests. In this talk we will discuss the importance of hereditary cancer on the Island, and its impact on the health of Islanders.
In addition, we will discuss a new approach to genetic testing, where 23 other genes will be evaluated in addition to BRCA1 and BRCA2.
Identifying patients at risk will help us to prevent cancer or find it at an earlier more treatable stage.
