BCHC & PALS Partnership

Two Charities. One Continuum of Care.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and PALS are independent charities with distinct roles in Bermuda's cancer care pathway. In November 2025, we formalised many years of working side by side into a partnership built around a single principle: that a patient's care should move as one continuous journey, rather than a series of handovers.

Why This Matters

Cancer care in Bermuda is delivered by a small number of organisations, each with specialist expertise in a particular stage of the pathway. That specialisation is a strength: it avoids duplication of services and maintains a high standard of care. It also means that a patient's journey involves more than one organisation, and the points of transition between them require careful coordination.

A patient may complete radiation therapy at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre in the afternoon and require support at home that same evening. Another may be navigating diagnosis at the Centre while a PALS nurse is already managing their comfort and equipment at home. The care is continuous, even where the organisations providing it are independent.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed by both charities in November 2025 exists to strengthen those transitions through coordinated patient care, shared staff training, joint educational initiatives, wellness and survivorship support, and the development of new or enhanced services.

"This agreement formalises what has long been true, that PALS and BCHC share a deep commitment to providing compassionate, integrated care for our community. By strengthening how we work together, we can ensure that every person with cancer in Bermuda receives the best possible support at every stage of their journey."
Dr Chris Fosker, CEO and Medical Director, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre

"For 45 years, PALS has supported Bermuda's cancer patients, providing compassionate care where it matters most — at home. Strengthening our partnership with Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre ensures every patient receives seamless, coordinated care, guided by dignity, respect, and compassion, from diagnosis through treatment and home-based support."
Colleen English, Executive Director, PALS

The Partnership in Practice

29 May 2026

Joint Education Session: Managing Radiation-Induced Side Effects

Clinical teams from BCHC and PALS met for a joint education session on the management of radiation-induced side effects, led by BCHC's Ellen Trueman. The session addressed the assessment, intervention and ongoing management of side effects that commonly present in the days and weeks after a patient returns home. It was among the first shared training initiatives delivered under the MoU.
