Advanced breast imaging technology offers women faster answers, greater clarity, and expanded diagnostic options.
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre (BCHC) has once again advanced cancer care in Bermuda with the introduction of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM), becoming the first provider on the island to offer this innovative breast imaging technology.
Officially launched on June 9, 2026, the new service represents another significant step forward in BCHC’s commitment to ensuring Bermuda residents have access to world-class cancer screening, diagnosis, and care close to home.
For many women, receiving a call-back after a screening mammogram can be an anxious and uncertain experience. Contrast-Enhanced Mammography provides radiologists with an additional diagnostic tool that can help distinguish between normal breast tissue and areas requiring further investigation, often delivering greater clarity and confidence in the diagnostic process.
The technology combines a standard mammogram with a contrast agent administered through a small intravenous injection. The contrast highlights areas of increased blood flow within the breast, helping radiologists identify abnormalities that may not be as clearly visible on conventional imaging alone.
"Early detection remains one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against breast cancer," said Dr. Risk, Radiologist at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. "Contrast-Enhanced Mammography gives us another highly effective imaging option, particularly in cases where additional information is needed following screening or diagnostic imaging. By bringing this technology to Bermuda, we are providing patients with access to advanced diagnostic capabilities that previously may not have been available on island."
Breast density can make some abnormalities more difficult to detect using conventional mammography alone. Contrast-Enhanced Mammography can provide additional information that may assist radiologists in evaluating suspicious findings and determining the most appropriate next steps in a patient's care. It can also serve as an alternative imaging option for some patients who may not be suitable candidates for breast MRI.
Importantly, the examination is performed in the same mammography suite using BCHC's state-of-the-art GE Senographe Pristina mammography system. The procedure is similar to a standard mammogram and can often be completed in approximately ten minutes.
The introduction of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography builds on BCHC's long-standing investment in breast health services and diagnostic excellence. In 2025 alone, BCHC performed 8,079 screening mammograms, 1,237 breast ultrasounds, 117 ultrasound-guided biopsies, and 33 stereotactic biopsies, resulting in the diagnosis of 73 breast cancers.
These numbers underscore the critical role that early detection and timely diagnosis play in improving outcomes for women in Bermuda.
"Our goal has always been to ensure that people in Bermuda have access to the highest quality cancer care without unnecessary barriers," said Dr. Risk. "This technology allows us to provide more advanced imaging, reduce uncertainty for patients, and in some cases reach answers more quickly, helping patients and their families move forward with confidence."
Patients who may benefit from Contrast-Enhanced Mammography will require a physician referral. The service is covered by insurance and, consistent with BCHC's commitment to equitable access to care, there is no co-pay for services provided at the Centre.
The launch reflects BCHC's broader mission of continually investing in innovation, technology, and expertise to improve cancer outcomes for everyone in Bermuda.
