The Bermuda Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment programme is under the medical direction of Dr Kevin S. Hughes, MD, FACS.

Dr Hughes is Director of Cancer Genetics and McKoy Rose Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. He also holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Harvard Medical School, following more than two decades at Massachusetts General Hospital.
With over 30 years of experience in breast cancer care and hereditary cancer research, Dr Hughes is internationally recognised for his work in:
-
Identifying individuals at increased genetic risk
-
Advancing the clinical use of genetic testing
-
Defining evidence-based standards in breast cancer management
-
Optimising treatment by using the least amount necessary to achieve the best outcomes
His approach is rooted in prevention, early detection, and practical decision-making. Genetic testing, when appropriate, is used to identify elevated risk before cancer develops, allowing screening and management to be tailored thoughtfully and proactively.
This leadership ensures that Bermuda’s genetics programme reflects current international standards while remaining grounded in careful, individualised care.
