New Mammography Machine at BCHC Means Greater Access, Earlier Detection and Improved Comfort for Women in Bermuda

We are pleased to annunce that the Centre has installed a second state-of-the-art GE Senographe Pristina 3D mammography machine. This new machine strengthens the Centre’s ability to provide early detection, clinical precision and equitable access to care.

With one in three women in Bermuda expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and breast cancer remaining the most common cancer among women, this upgrade is a critical step to continuing to detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage.

Now operating two of the most advanced 3D mammography systems available, BCHC offers all patients, regardless of insurance coverage or ability to pay, access to:

· High-resolution breast images that improve the ability to detect even the smallest abnormalities at an early, more treatable stage

· A more comfortable patient experience, thanks to an innovative

· A lower radiation dose, without compromising image quality or diagnostic confidence

“This upgrade enhances our ability to detect breast cancer earlier, with sharper image quality that gives us a clearer view of what’s happening,” said Dr Paul Risk, breast specialist radiologist at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “And by having two advanced systems, we can serve more patients more efficiently, with fewer delays or compromises in care.”

BCHC reminds all women aged 40 and over to speak with their doctor about scheduling a mammogram. Regular screening remains the most effective way to detect breast cancer early, when treatment is most successful and survival rates are highest.

Mammography services remained fully operational throughout the installation process, ensuring that patient care continued without interruption.

The Centre also provides patients with comprehensive support services:

· An onsite breast-specialised radiologist, available to interpret images quickly and speak directly with patients or their physicians

· Cancer navigators who offer compassionate, personalised guidance to help patients understand next steps, access timely referrals and navigate care options

As a nonprofit organisation, BCHC relies on community support to invest in the latest medical technology. The Centre is deeply grateful to donors, sponsors and fundraising partners who helped raise $265,976.67 toward the $400,000 cost of this essential upgrade.

“This new machine represents a real step forward for breast care in Bermuda,” said Dr Risk. “It’s not just a technological upgrade, it’s a demonstration of our community’s commitment to women’s health.”
