It has shown me just how important it is to give back no matter how big or small the impact will always be life changing. When asked, WHY I RELAY? I automatically think of my 4 year old niece Sophia.

On December 2nd, 2013 Sophia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Living in Upstate New Jersey I wondered just how my family in Bermuda could pull together to help her and her parents get through such a challenging time.

That’s how our participation in Relay for Life came about. My family thought this was a great opportunity to not only help raise awareness about Sophia and her form of cancer but about the many different forms and effects of cancer people endure. At the tender age of 3, Sophia displayed so many characteristics of an adult through her strength and courage which allowed her to push through this unwanted news, it is amazing.

As of February 2014, she had reached remission and will continue her chemo treatment until February 2016. Sophia loves dance, soccer and just being an outgoing little girl with a HUGE spirit of joy.

Sophia continues to receive treatment at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I write this tribute to her in hopes that she remembers to always be a bubbly and outgoing kid who will never stop shining!
