Men in Bermuda are being asked to ‘Man Up’ To Raise Awareness for Men’s Health

Hamilton, Bermuda, October 21, 2020 – Men’s health is in crisis. Globally, men are dying 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. As the leading charity tackling prostate and other  cancers affecting men, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre and Gillette are asking men to ‘Man Up’ for MOvember Bermuda.

“More commonly known as MOvember.bm, the month of November is about getting men involved in activities they already love, such as challenging a rival sports team to a competition or round of golf, hosting a BBQ with friends or growing and shaving a moustache or beard” says Azuree Williams, Event and Programme Manager at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “These activities are more than fun times and memories shared, but are a vital opportunity for our men to encourage each other to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to remind each other of the importance of knowing your family history and getting an annual health check-up each year.”

Men are asked to register, for free, at the beginning of the month at www.MOvember.bm and then use the month of November to reflect on their wellbeing, healthy habits and find fun and unique ways to raise funds. Whether men choose to use their MO, their MOVE or their MO-ment, they will be raising money to help Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre fund men’s health initiatives, from prevention through treatment, so that more men live happier, healthier and longer lives.

Since 2013, MO Bros have raised more than $630,000 locally, successfully funding an annual Men’s Health Screening event.  This event targets men, primarily those without health insurance (or who are underinsured), as local research shows they are less likely to receive an annual health check-up, some not seeing a doctor in over 5yrs. Attracting approximately 300 men a year this health fair style event provides the opportunity to meet with numerous health professionals in a single location for a variety of health screenings, from blood pressure and glucose testing to prostate exams.

“An objective of the annual Men’s Health Screening is to help identify men whose screening results show that they may be at risk of a more serious condition” says Mrs. Williams.  “In these instances organisations step up to work with the gentlemen to lower their risk factors.”

The funds raised through MOvember.bm also assist men in receiving follow-up services at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, such as prostate consultations, PSA testing and DRE exams. In some cases, if diagnosed with prostate cancer, they continue on at the Centre to receive radiation therapy cancer treatment, potentially saving a life.

Because MOvember.bm is about bringing men together to support each other, the month wouldn’t be complete without a celebration of their efforts. Through the generous support of Gillette, participating men and their supporters will be invited to a COVID-19 friendly event on December 4, 2020 at 6:00pm at Fort Hamilton, where men will receive the attention and pampering they have earned.

100% of all funds donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre are used to support local men’s health initiatives including the free annual men’s health screening event, lunch and learn Reduce Your Risk presentation series and the Centre’s Equal Access Fund providing financial subsidisation for prostate consultation, ultrasounds, biopsies and radiation therapy.
