Risk factors
Identified risk factors for developing Osteoporosis that is factors that increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis are called “risk factors”.
- Being female
- Thin and or small frame
- Advanced age
- A family history of osteoporosis
- Early menopause (before 45 years of age)
- Post menopause, including early or surgically induced menopause
- Abnormal absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea)
- Certain medical conditions - Anorexia nervosa, bulimia, liver disease
- A diet low in calcium
- Use of certain medications, such as corticosteriods and thyroid hormone
- Low testosterone levels in men
- Inactive lifestyle
- Smoking & Excessive use of alcohol
- Previous fracture
- Being Caucasian or Asian, although African descent are at significant risk as well
Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass in the 5-7 years following menopause. However, experts agree that all people should take the following steps to preserve their bone health and promote a healthier lifestyle.
- Eat a balanced diet
- Exercise regularly
- Stop Smoking
- Reduce your use of alcohol
