Mammography
Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast. Digital mammography uses low dose x-rays and a detector system which allows for manipulation of the image for a more thorough exam. Successful treatment of breast cancer depends on early diagnosis, and mammography plays a major role in early detection of breast cancers. It is important that all women learn about the risk factors and signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

Women avoid screening for many reasons; the most common being the fear of a positive finding. Asking your doctor for information will help you understand the importance of this screening and detecting cancer at its early stage, when it is highly curable. If you do receive a positive diagnosis, ask specific questions about breast cancer and its treatment. Get as much information as you can; use the internet for breast cancer websites/links . Get the facts; don’t be scared by myths and horror stories.

Benefits of Digital Mammography vs . Analog Mammography

•  Improved screening accuracy in women with dense breast tissue

•  Allows the breast images to be reviewed with multiple images, greatly increasing earlier

detection of breast cancer, which then allows more options for treatment and a higher incidence of survival

•  Shorter exam time

•  May require a lower dose of x-ray than is currently used in conventional mammography with no loss in accuracy.

•  Ability to transmit images over phone lines or a computer network for consultation with overseas physicians – a key issue for overseas referrals

The American Cancer Society reports that mammography can show changes in the breast and detect a lump up to three or four years before a woman or her physician can feel it. If a lump is discovered, mammography can be key in evaluating whether or not it is cancerous.

Furthermore, mammography can detect 85 to 90 percent of breast cancers in women. Thus the benefits of mammography far outweigh the risks and inconvenience. If a breast abnormality is found or confirmed with mammography, additional breast imaging tests such as ultrasound may be performed.
