Anti-Smoking Pilot Programme
Lung cancer is the No. 1 cancer killer and is responsible for more deaths than breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer combined. Tobacco addiction is by far the most important risk factor in the development of lung cancer which is estimated to be responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide each year. Therefore, tobacco is the single most preventable cause of illness and death. Beginning in November 2009, as part of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s efforts to educate the public on the prevention of all types of cancer, a pilot anti-smoking program was introduced in three (3) local primary schools. Target years are Yr. 5 and 6. By the fall of 2010, we hope to offer the program to all public and private primary schools. If you wish your school to participate please send us an email rsmith.simmons@chc.bm

SunSmart
Our SunSmart program is a school and summer camp based program. Our program aims to increase the awareness of our youth about the importance of practicing SunSmart behaviors while outdoors. We also seek to influence individual’s who are responsible for protecting others such as parents, teachers, friends and other family members with SunSmart behaviors. Our ultimate goal is to prevent the dangerous outcomes of sun exposure such as premature aging, skin leathering and skin cancer. We strive to reach this goal by educating our youth and the community through our program. Studies show that most of the skin’s damage occurs before the age of eighteen; it is vital, therefore that children in particular develop SunSmart habits early in life. SunSmart in Schools The educational program is a brief 15-20 minute presentation. During the presentation, students learn not only of the dangers of the sun but also how to protect themselves when outdoors, especially during the summer months. The message is delivered in a fun ‘skit’ format, and is reinforced with a sing-a-long “Slip, Slap, Slop” jingle which the children thoroughly enjoy. We currently present in local private and public preschools as well as private and public primary schools. On occasion we meet with Parent Teacher groups and hold forums that are open to the general public. If you are a school/camp and are interested in having the program presented at your school/camp, select registration form link below to get signed up. SunSmart Summer Camps In 2009, we expanded our program to accredit camps with a core educational and awareness focus. The accreditation standard requires summer camps to: participate in staff training; develop and submit (for review) a ‘Sun Protection Policy’; participate in a camp evaluation process which includes a survey that evaluates product usage and level of adherence to the camp’s policy. If you would like to register your camp to become accredited, select the training registration form below. Similar to our School program we visit camps throughout the summer and give presentations on the importance of practicing SunSmart behaviors. Community Awareness We currently run a public education campaign that reinforces our overall message of practicing SunSmart behaviors. A series of advertisements which target adults, are dispersed through the newspaper, press releases, information facts sheets and an advertorial between May 1 st and September 6 th . We also have a Wellness Talk annually in the month of May on Skin Cancer. The Wellness Talk is open to the public FREE of charge. HOW
TO BE SUNSMART! Damage to our skin and eyes can lead to cancer. You can practice the SunSmart behaviors we teach in order to prevent this from happening to you. Simply follow our 5 steps.
